After establishing the process of turning people's hands into molds for my piece in the first week, I was able to start working immediately.

At the speed of one hand a day, I would get random friends to hold a pose for me while I applied the strips of plaster. I would start during my class period and be finished by the end of my lunch, sometimes longer, and then proceed to do any finishing touches at home, ready to bring back a finished hand the next day.

As the days went by, I found myself getting faster and even better at making the molds as I got used to the process. The hands began to look a lot smoother and I could be much more efficient in my use of my own as well as others' time.

By the end of the week, I had 5 completed hands and was ready to make plans for displaying the hands as well as adding found objects.

At the start of the process for my sculpture piece, I had sketched and took notes about a number of different ideas for what I could use to represent opinions people may have about the female identity. This was before I had an exact number of how many hands I would have in the piece, and now that I did know, I had to re-evaluate my brainstorming and narrow it down to four main ideas.

The conclusion I ended up deciding on was having a hand to represent each of the following:

  • The female identity should be about innocence and femininity

  • The female identity should be about sexuality and maturity

  • The female identity should be about being nurturing and motherly

  • And lastly, the female identity should be about religion, faithfulness, and modest

And so my goal for the weekend became finding as many found objects as possible to include in this piece that would fit into one of these four categories.
